Senior Design

From problem framing to tested engineering systems.

The MAE 451–494 sequence connects students with authentic challenges from industry, research, competitions, university partners, museums, and community organizations.

Program overview

A structured two-course capstone sequence

Student teams define stakeholder needs, develop measurable requirements, investigate prior solutions, generate and evaluate concepts, complete analysis, build and integrate systems, and verify performance through testing and evidence.

Spaces for design, fabrication, integration, and testing

Senior Design Lab — 247 Bell Hall

A dedicated space supporting team meetings, mechanical and electrical integration, prototype assembly, troubleshooting, and preparation for technical reviews and demonstrations.

Industry Senior Design Lab — 109 Bonner Hall

A dedicated small lab with an overhead door, accessible to the street, suitable for industry heavy machine development.

PEP Club Workshop — 18 Kimball Hall, South Campus

A dedicated workshop for the PEP Club and its manned and unmanned electric boat teams to build, integrate, maintain, and test competition systems.

Poster and demonstration events

Six events, organized as interactive galleries

Every December, teams present design posters and receive technical feedback. Every May, beginning in 2024, teams demonstrate completed systems and verification results. Select an event to view featured images, awards, and the complete gallery.

Design-build-test experience beyond the classroom

PEP Club

  • Established in Spring 2025.
  • Supports the manned and unmanned boat teams.
  • PEP Club workshop established in Fall 2025 at 18 Kimball Hall on South Campus.

Competition results

  • April 2026: manned boat team earned First place in the displacement category.
  • April 2025: manned boat team earned First place in the displacement category.
  • April 2024: manned boat team earned Third place in the displacement category.
  • April 2024: unmanned boat team recorded the competition’s Highest speed at 40 mph.
  • May 2025: NASA Lunabotics team received Best First-Year Presentation recognition.
