 Grading

Your grade in the course is determined by your performance in exams and weekly assignments according to the following formula:

  • 3 exams (including Final):
    • lowest score counts 10% (based on T-score; see below)
    • remaining exams count 35% each
  • Weekly assignments 20%

More specifically, your grade on each exam is converted into a T-score. The T-score is given by

           (Raw score) - (Class average)

T-score = ------------------------------

             (Class standard deviation)

where "Raw score" is the your score on the exam as returned to you, and the other quantities are class statistics for the exam.

The Class average and standard deviations on the various exams will be recorded in the following table

Exam

Class Average

Standard Deviation

Exam #1

75.0

15.7

Exam #2

69.6

19.3

Final Exam

68.4

15.8

Homework

82.3

14.8

Homework raw score is obtained by summing your scores on all homeworks and dividing by the total possible score (through problem set 14, this is 1265), and multiplying by 100.

Your Overall T-score is obtained from your exam/homework T-scores, each weighted as described above.

Your Overall T-score translates roughly into a letter grade as follows.
