Mardel Ogilvie

1909-1986

Mardel Ogilvie received her bachelor and masters degree from Cornell University in 1931 and 1932. Following her graduation she became a Teacher in the Speech Department at Fredonia College. Her association with Fredonia was from 1932 to 1949. She received her doctorate from Teachers College at Columbia University in 1942. In 1950 she moved to Queens College where she taught in the Speech Department, a program that combined training in theatre, oral interpretation, debate, speech improvement, rhetoric, phonetics, pedagogy, and puppetry! In 1973, Ogilvie became a Professor in the Speech and Theater department at Lehman College.

In her 1942 dissertation, Ogilvie categorized and provided a historical analysis of terminology and definitions used in the field to name different speech problems. Following that work she concentrated her scholarship on service delivery of speech pathology in America’s public schools.

Ogilvie’s 1963 book with John Eisenson discusses the classification and incidence of speech defects and the provision of speech correction services in the US. The book emphasizes relationship between the classroom teacher and the speech clinician as they provide services to children with speech impairments. The book covers various kinds of speech problems in the schools, their causes and nature, therapy approaches used by speech clinicians, and the role of the classroom teacher in providing services for children with speech problems.
