Max Nadoleczny

1874-1940

Max Nadoleczny was an otolaryngologist and speech doctor. He was a student of Hermann Gutzmann Sr., the famous speech doctor located in Berlin. Nadoleczny was affiliated with the University of Munich in Germany for 40 years. Among his students were Gottfried Arnold.

Nadoleczny organized free courses for children with speech and language disabilities in Munich.

Nadoleczny saw stuttering as stemming from a neurosis, a spastic incoordination. In Nadoleczny’s words: “A nervous reaction in regard to speech coordination caused by the nature of the stutterer’s constitution, where psychical and physical disturbances are rather hopelessly entangled” (p. 137 in Hahn, 1942).

Nadoleczny was the chair of the Phoniatric Department and began a speech and hearing clinic at the Hospital and Health Center for Neck, Nose and Ear at the University in Munich. He served in those capacities from 1910 to 1939. He also organized free courses for children with speech and language disabilities in Munich and carried out a robust research program resulting in 125 publications.

He was on the editorial board in the early years of the Journal of Speech Disorders, a journal published by the American Speech Correction Association.
