Portrait of Bishop LowthRobert Lowth was a Bishop of the Church of England and professor of poetry at Oxford University. In 1762, Lowth published A short introduction to English grammar. He based his grammar on Latin. This textbook remained in standard usage throughout educational institutions in Britain until the early 20th century. His approach to grammar was prescriptive, emulating Latin structure. For example he recommended never to split an infinitive or end a sentence with a preposition.
