Tonawanda Creek- Clarence/Newstead

Creek in late Spring

PHOTOS   1  2

Description: The Tonawanda Creek's easterly end extends beyond Batavia, the westerly end combining with the Erie Canal in Pendleton, which taken further will lead you to the Niagara River in Tonawanda.
The section shown here is a section on the upper portion of Newstead
The launch site I used was located on Kelkenberg Road, though there are two other access sites- see Put-In.
When I paddled this section in the early summer, there were so many mosquitos, that I only lasted for a couple of hours on the water. Bring your deet.
I came across alot of downed tress that required "hopping over", boat and all. The creek had a bit of current in parts, but nothing that posed a problem. I started upstream so that my paddle back could be more relaxing. This might be different at different times of the year, depending on the water level.

Put-in:
Take Tonawanda Creek Road south (meaning it's on the south side of the creek)
From Rte 78, drive east for 3.9 miles, to junction of Rapids Road, just after Goodrich Rd enters from the right Do not cross the bridge but stay right and continue for 3.2 miles more until you reach a T at Rapids Rd. Turn right, then take an almost-immediate left onto Kelkenberg Rd. From here, it is about 1/10 of a mile to the Kelkenberg Rd access on the left.
Alternate Put-ins:
TRANSIT RD ACCESS- Transit Rd is Rte 78, the access is immediately north of the bridge, and there is a wide shoulder on the western side. Be careful when entering and leaving Transit Rd, as traffic is ridiculously fast.
RTE 93 ACCESS- At the Rte 93 Bridge, located east of the Kelkenberg access site, launching can be done from either side of this bridge.
