You initially have 5 philosopher’s stones to use during this course. You will also have opportunities to earn even more of them based on your attendance and social annotations. You may then exchange your philosopher’s stones to unleash special philosophical powers!

Earning Philosopher’s Stones

  • If less than 70% of the class fully attends a regular class meeting, then everyone who did so that day will earn 0.20 of a philosopher’s stone.
  • If less than 50% of the class fully attends a regular class meeting, then everyone who did so that day will earn 0.50 of a philosopher’s stone.
  • For every 300 points you earn from social annotations, you will earn 0.25 of a philosopher’s stone.

You use your philosopher’s stones by emailing me. In your email, please be specific about how you are using your stone. For instance, your email might say that you are using 1 philosopher’s stone for a 24-hour extension on the social annotations for “How Do I Assess an Argument?” Once I know all that, I will make it happen!

Using Philosopher’s Stones

One philosopher’s stone may be exchanged for…

Three philosopher’s stone may be exchanged for…

  • The full 240 philosophy experience points from one in-class discussion with a guest speaker (this includes a guest speaker you may have missed). You may do this for any day of class marked with “Guest Speaker” in the course schedule.
  • The full 250 philosophy experience points from one in-class activity (this includes an in-class activity you may have missed). You may do this for any in-class activity (excluding the Final Presentations) marked with “due in class” in the course schedule.

Finally, for each philosopher’s stone that you do not use by the end of the course, you will earn 20 philosophy experience points.

So use your philosopher’s stones wisely!
