The Tuscarora CD-ROM Project involves people at
Tuscarora School, the Tuscarora community, Niagara-Wheatfield High
School, and the State University of New York at Buffalo. The intent
is to create a CD-ROM of Tuscarora language and culture that can
be used as an instructional tool for the students in grades kindergarten
through six at Tuscarora School. Early planning meetings involved
Janneke Bogyo and the Culture teachers at the Tuscarora School.
Dr. James Collins plays a vital role in this project
as many of his students have participated in this project. As a
component of Professor Collins' literacy course students work at
the Tuscarora School gaining actual experiences teaching literacy
skills. GSE students are provided an opportunity to acquire important
technology skills beyond what they are exposed to in a regular classroom
situation. The GSE students gain valuable teaching experiences by
working with and teaching the Tuscarora students interviewing, camera,
and video editing techniques.

The authenticity of the project provides UB students
with a learning environment where they can develop higher order
thinking skills and the skills that are highly valued in a work
environment. The Tuscarora CD-ROM Project is a model for future
projects, which would involve students in real-life projects that
benefit the community, the students, and the schools.
