A course web site including a scavenger hunt program
was developed to allow a large undergraduate class, "Introduction
to the Internet", to practice their Internet search skills.

How do you teach a class of 200+ students how to
use and understand the Internet? Naturally, in order for the instruction
to be effective, it's imperative that the students use the Internet
to supplement the instruction of the course. However, with a class
size that large, it is not possible for students to use the Internet
during the scheduled class time. This was the problem Professor
Gary Ozanich was faced with in his course "Introduction to
the Internet."
With guidance from Professor Ozanich, an interactive
web site was designed that would help support the teaching modules
of the course. Ozanich also uses the UBLearns course management
system for the essentials and communication tools. The course web
site provides technology and classroom support including a Search
Engine assignment that students submit over the web, a Browser Tune-up,
and guides to Web Design and Usability.
The Instructional Support team helped Ozanich design
a project called the "Internet Scavenger Hunt." Ozanich
wanted the students to use the search techniques and information
about search engines that they learned during class. Ozanich was
able to keep track of each student's attempt using their individual
student numbers. The students were given a randomly assigned search
question and then given the opportunity to answer the question using
the Internet and search techniques they learned in during class.
