Usual assumptions for doing molecular evolution studies

Single origin for life on this planet (==> all descended from common ancestor whether that was only initial organism or not isn't critical)

Evolution (assuming this isn't circular here; the existence of other evidence for evolution not to mention the molecular data being powerful support doesn't keep this from being an assumption)

Divergent pattern = tree (most subissues below supported by data to date)

Usually divergence, not tri or greater

Little reticulation
Little horizontal evolution
Branching with change on the branches
Convergence very rare
