The Deterrence Project

University at Buffalo, SUNY

In addition to the case studies, nine working papers were written under the auspices of the Center. Working Paper # 1 is the original typescript of Glenn Snyder's seminal "'Prisoner's Dilemma' and 'Chicken' Models in International Politics" which was subsequently published in International Studies Quarterly in 1971. Working Paper # 8 does not exist as a separate document. Working Paper #7, however, contains two distinct sections, the second of which may have been intended as a separate document. The links below are to each section of a separately paginated document included in Paul Diesing's archives labeled "Working Paper 7."

In addition to the working papers, links are provided below to some related material. The first is a passage that Snyder may have cut from an earlier draft of Working Paper # 1. Another is a coding sheet used by Diesing that is presumably the template he used to compose Chapter IV, "Information Processing." Two unattributed documents, both using Richardson type action-reaction models, are also included below. Paul Diesing is most likely the author of "Divided Government" and "A Non-Bargaining Model." It is possible, however, that Dean Pruitt may also have written them.

Working Paper #1 (Glenn H. Snyder): "'Prisoners' Dilemma' and 'Chicken' Models in International Politics"

Working Paper #2 (Glenn H. Snyder): "Notes on Threats, Commitments and 'Moves'"

Working Paper #3 (Glenn H. Snyder): "Guidelines for Case Studies in Crisis Bargaining"

Working Paper #4 (Glenn H. Snyder): "Bargaining Tactics and the 'Critical Risk-Credibility' Model"

Working Paper #5 (Paul Diesing): "Types of Bargaining Theory"

Working Paper #6 (Paul Diesing and Glenn H. Snyder): "Format and Checklist for Case Studies"

Working Paper #7 (Paul Diesing): "Notes on a Cognitive Process Model of Bargaining (Type IV A)"

Working Paper #8 (Paul Diesing): "Decision-Making"

Working Paper #9 (Glenn H. Snyder): "Cataclysmic Factors in Crisis Behavior"
