Description:
We were looking for somewhere to paddle that was somewhat protected, and found this great little 40 acre lake called Hodgdon Pond. (Somesville, the center of Mount Desert Island, is only 4.7 miles away.) The inlet and outlet of Hodgdon Pond as well as the entire opposite shore are owned and protected by Acadia National Park.
The surrounding shoreline was ablaze with colors when we paddled here in late October. Since the eastern shore is owned by Acadia National Park, it was very quiet and felt very secluded from the rest of the civilized sections of the Island.
We saw a few ducks and other birds here, and had the entire pond to ourselves for paddling.
After we loaded up the boats, we wanted to catch a sunset, so we drove down Turner Road to Sawyers Cove where we did beach combing and took in magnificent views.
Later, we drove to Bernard where there is a picture-postcard lighthouse.

On the northern side of Hodgdon Road, there is a very small parking area among some pines and a soft put in.

Camping: Yes. There are camp sites available in Acadia National Park, as well as a number of other private campsites scattered throughout the Island - reservations suggested.
