Dr. Jun Xia
Dr. Xia received his Bachelor of Science degree from the Physics Department at the University of Science and Technology of China in 2004. He then moved to the University of Toronto and received his Ph.D. degree in 2010 under the mentorship of Dr. Andreas Mandelis on photothermal imaging. In the same year, he joined Dr. Lihong V. Wang's lab at Washington University in St. Louis as a postdoctoral fellow and conducted research on photoacoustic imaging. In 2014, he joined the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University at Buffalo as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2020. Dr. Xia’s lab has received support from NIH, NSF, Susan G. Komen foundation, New York State, and industries. He has published one book, three book chapters and more than ninety papers in peer-reviewed journals in various areas of photothermal and photoacoustic research. In recent years, he has also worked on other optical and acoustic modalities to improve the future of biomedical imaging and therapy.

Wenhan Zheng
Ph.D. Student
Wenhan Zheng received his B.S. from the department of Biomedical Engineering at UB in 2019. He continued as an Master student in in 2019 and was transferred to the Ph.D. program in 2020. He has worked in Dr. Xia’s lab since Feb. 2018. Wenhan works biosensing and biometric applicaitons of PA.

Emily Zheng
Ph.D. Student
Emily Zheng, graduated with B.S. from the department of Biomedical Engineering at UB in 2020. She joined Dr. Xia’s lab in Summer 2019 as a research assistant and was admitted to the PhD program in Fall 2020. Emily is a 2020 Schomburg fellow and currently works on breast cancer imaging.

Chuqin Huang
Ph.D. Student
Chuqin Huang graduated with B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2018 and received his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering at University of Washington in 2020. He was admitted to the PhD program and joined Dr. Xia’s lab in April 2021. He now works on the foot ulcer image project.

Yanda Chen
Ph.D. Student
Yanda Cheng graduated with B.S. in Electronics and Computer Engineering (2019) from University of Kentucky. He earned his Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering (2021) from Cornell University. He joined Dr. Xia's lab and admitted to the PhD program in Fall 2021. He now works on the foot ulcer imaging project.

Robert Bing

Robert Bing graduated in 2022 with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in Nanotechnology from Boston University. He has joined Dr. Xia's lab and was admitted to the PhD program in Fall 2022. He is working on portable and wearable photoacoustics and ultrasonic sensing.

Varun Shijo
Ph.D. Student
Varun Shijo graduated with his B.E. from SIES Graduate School of Technology (University of Mumbai) in 2017, following which he got his MS in Computer Science - specializing in Artificial Intelligence - from UB in 2019. Varun has worked in machine learning, deep learning and computer vision in the industry with CentralSquare Technologies, NC, USA and TATA AIG General Insurance Company, Mumbai, India. He was admitted to the CSE PhD program in 2022 and is currently co-advised by Dr. Wenyao Xu (CSE) and Dr. Xia towards the application of deep learning in photoacoustic imaging for biomedical applications.
