In this module, I welcome you to the course while letting you know what to expect.

To that end, I have 4 learning outcomes for you. When you finish this module, you will be able to…

  1. Recall a few things about your instructor and this course,
  2. Locate important information on this website and in the course syllabus,
  3. Set up your Twitter account for the course, and
  4. Introduce yourself to the professor and your classmates on Twitter.

The Syllabus

The Syllabus for Ethics!

Context

This is the syllabus for the course. All the material it contains has been reproduced on this course website. However, clicking on it above will open it up within Perusall. That way, you can start practicing how to annotate texts in Perusall. If you are having trouble, please let me know and I’ll do my best to help.

In addition, you can find the syllabus in PDF format, if you want to download a copy for yourself. There is also a copy of the syllabus for printing, which you may want instead.

Optional Material

Some modules will conclude with an optional “Curious for More?” section, where I have posted some additional material. So, for example, this module ends with a short video clip from the tv show The Good Place, which aired a few years ago. Pretty much all the images on this website are taken from that show, so I figured I’d include that clip as a way to introduce you to the show. (The Good Place seems to be regularly available on Netflix if you wish to watch the whole series and better appreciate some of my more obscure jokes.)

In any case, I will often discuss this optional material in my lecture videos. However, you are not required to watch the optional videos or read the optional readings. When it comes to anything marked “optional”, you are only responsible for what I actually cover in my lecture videos. However, I do encourage you to dig deeper into each module’s “Curious for More?” section if you want to learn even more!

Twitter Quick Start Guide

Here is what you need to do to get quickly started with the Twitter activity:

  1. Set up a public Twitter account. This can be a personal account, or a disposable account created just for this course. In either case, your account must be public, and that means anyone (inside or outside of the course) will be able to see your tweets. So feel free to set up your account with a generic name like EthicsQueen.
  2. Always remember, you are neither required nor expected to tweet, or otherwise reveal, any personal information about yourself, including your first name, on Twitter.

  3. Use this account to tweet at me (@ProfessorDEG), letting me know that you are enrolled in the course. Do not forget to include the course hashtag, #E22 in your tweet. For example, you could tweet something simple like:
           “Hi @ProfessorDEG, I am enrolled in #E22!”
Maybe change it up, or include a GIF/meme, so it’s less boring, but you get the idea.
  4. Email me (degray@buffalo.edu) the name of this account, so I can keep track of your Twitter participation in the grade book. When emailing me, please always include “E22” in your email subject, so I immediately know which class you are from. I am the only person with whom you are required to disclose the name of your Twitter account. I will not share that information with anyone inside or outside of the class.
