Reference Interview Key Issues
- Seemingly rude, repeated requests for the same item may stem from their homeland experiences with bureaucracy.
- Students may not recognize the difference between "have to," "should" and "could."*
- Students may also translate directly from their language. They may state, “I want you to get me this book now.”* They don’t realize this sounds pushy to us.
- Do not take offence if members of some cultures tend to stand closer to you than you are accustomed to.
- Females, don’t take offense if a male international student requests to speak to only a male librarian.
- Differing cultures have differing views as to the level of formality in male/female interactions.
Female librarians should avoid touching the male international learner on the arm to show him the book.
- Not all cultures sanction poking fun at others. Use humor sparingly.
