Description:
Rollins Pond is located behind the Fish Creek campground, and is by far the nicest campground I've ever stayed at.
The pictures that you'll see are from 2002 and 2003. We returned in 2003 after having such a glorious time up here the previous year. We rented a canoe from the Rollins Pond Boat Livery each time.
In 2002, we paddled up Rollins Pond and into Floodwood directly from our campsite. We packed a lunch and paddled to a DEC campsite where we ate and swam in the cold clear water of Floodwood Pond. It was a beautiful day and our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and tuna tasted more delicious than I've ever tasted before or since. On the return trip back to our campsite, we ran into a headwind across Rollins Pond. We stayed close to the shore, but still found it difficult to keep our canoe on course. Our sunset paddle later that night was amazing. The stars and moon put on a show for us, with a loon calling to us on the pond. We thought this must surely be what heaven is like.
In 2003, we returned but didn't have time for a paddle trip, with all the hiking we planned. Instead, we lazily paddled around the pond, catching bullfrogs and walking out onto sandbars. An evening paddle let us relive our piece of heaven from the previous year.

Rollins Pond Campground - run by the DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) - reservations at reserveamerica.com. It has 287 sites - about 200 of them on the water. There tends to be a fair amount of spacing between the sites. To reach Rollins Pond Campground, you need to drive through Fish Creek Ponds Campground (also run by the DEC). The sites at Fish Creek Ponds are much closer together and there are many motorboats on those waters. Rollins Pond CG is about one hour and ten minutes from Lake Placid (this includes the time to drive through Fish Creek Ponds Campground).
