Description:
Kipawa is a lake system and a village located in the southwestern most part of the Province of Quebec, just over the Ontario-Quebec border. It's roughly 6 hours from Buffalo and 4.5 hours from Toronto. The Village of Kipawa has a population of approximately 520, (in other words it's a pretty secluded place)! Kipawa means "closed-off waters" in Algonquian, but ironically has 2000 miles of coast line and is fantastic for anyone who likes to kayak, canoe, fish or just simply relax!

The paddling here is truly amazing - on a typical day you'll see gorgeous islands, steep rock faces, hawks, beavers, and a few fisherman here and there. But more than anything else, you'll find calmness and solitude. The waters were like glass most of the days we paddled, regardless if it was morning, noon, or night. However, like any lake, storms will bring white caps and windy paddling conditions - so just be smart!

When we visited Lake Kipawa in July of 2003 we stayed at Alwaki Lodge on White Beaver Island, 14 miles from the village of Kipawa. The lodge is run by Brian, Tina, and Rob Douglas who made our 5 day stay very comfortable, enjoyable and affordable! The cabins on the island have been newly renovated and accommodate anywhere from 2-8 people.

They will portage your canoes or kayaks to the island on their pontoon boat but, if you don't want to haul yours up there, they have classic cedar strip canoes that are free to use. We highly recommend staying here if you visit the lake. It's simply a great place with great people. For more information check out Alwaki Lodge online.
