Niagara Walkers Help WNY Win at Empire State Games



Niagara Walker qualifiers won a total of 8 medals for WNY at the 2004 Empire State Games just concluded in Binghampton.

Niagara Walkers coach Dave Lawrence and Mel McGinnis played switch-around in the 3 races they won. In Thursday's 10k, Dave Lawrence won a gold with 49 minutes even, while Mel won the silver with 49:52. On Friday, Mel won the 5k gold with a 23:35 and Dave took the silver with 23:47. On Saturday in the Men's 20k Mel edged by Dave with a time of 1:52:50 for the silver to Dave's 1:53:03 for the bronze.

In the Women's 5k on Friday, NW Laurie Smith took the bronze with a time of 28:24. Chrissy Fina took the bronze in the Women's 20k with a time of 2:06:17.

This is truly an outstanding showing by our own Niagara Walkers! Congratulations to each of them for such a fine effort! As of the end of Saturday, WNY led all 5 regions with a total of 233 medals. Central was second with a distant 186 medals.
