About Me

Hi! My name is Zolal Ayazpour. I am a PhD candidate working with Dr. Kang Sun in the Environmental Engineering Department at University at Buffalo. Since May 2020, I have been working as a visiting PhD student and predoctoral fellow with the Atmospheric Measurement group at Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics under the supervision of Dr. Gonzalo González Abad and Dr. Caroline Nowlan. My research interest is to study the chemistry and physics of the Earth's atmosphere. Using satellite observations, I work on developing algorithms to retrieve trace gas column densities and estimate short-lived air pollutant emissions. I am also interested in applying data-driven and machine learning approaches to discover new insights into atmospheric features that lack comprehensive global measurements.

Research

My Ph.D. work so far focuses on:
• Estimating NOx emissions from power generating facilities in the US using satellite observations and comparing with ground-based measurements
• Development of algorithms to retrieve formaldehyde column density from reflected sunlight in space
• Uncertainty quantification and validation of satellite retrieval product with global, ground-based sensor networks
• Development of spatially complete planetary boundary layer height product over the US using an observational data-driven approach
• Study of spatial and temporal variability of ozone sensitivity over the Middle East observed by TROPOMI satellite instrument
