Connecting and Printing to an SMBS serviced printer
by Ken Johnson as of 2008 09 09
In order to connect to any of the SMBS print or file servers from off campus
or when using on-campus-wireless,
you will need to get UBVPN from http://ubit.buffalo.edu/software
Follow their instructions for installation.
This should only need to be done once for the life of your computer.
Any time you want to use an SMBS server you will need to Start: Programs: Cisco: VPN Client
This will have to be repeated if you have restarted the computer or lost the connection.
Select your location.
Sign on with your UB name and password
Your computer should now appear to the SMBS servers as if you were attached 'on campus' although you will see no difference other than the 'locked' icon in you system tray (near the clock)
If for some reason the UBVPN disconnects you, you'll see the 'unlocked' icon instead
Note: The network you are using will need to allow the 'vpn' protocol to pass through. Some locations do not provide this channel. At home you may need to configure your router to allow such a connection.
Now that your computer is 'connected', it's time to add a printer.
start: Settings: Printers and Faxes: Add a printer
Choose 'a network printer'
Select 'Connect to this printer...' and fill in the blank.
For the Color printer in Cary rm 231 use: \\smbs15a\cary-color
For the black and white high volume printer in Cary rm 231 use: \\smbs01\cary-bw
You will need to use your SMBS name and password to be allowed to use the printer
You may see this lame warning, to which you will agree.
You probably won't want to use this as your default printer since it will only be available when you have an internet connection
and have succesfully logged on with UBVPN.
Now try printing something and hope you can find it when you finally make it to Cary Hall to rummage through the printouts waiting to be claimed.
