Eustacia

6 Century AD

Eustacia devoted herself to helping the sick. Her uncle, Bishop Gregory of Tours described what she did for a woman who was afflicted by demons that caused her tongue to be paralyzed: "The people tried an appliance of herbs and verbal incantations; but were unable by medical skill to allay the malady...Our daughter [Eustachia], coming to the sick woman and seeing her with the foolish herb dressing, poured oil from the Holy Sepulchre into her mouth, with the result that the sick woman began to convalesce."
