True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle Book Cover

Sailing the net with Charlotte Doyle

Chapter 8:

Miss Doyle was just offered a sailor's outfit of canvas pants and blouse made by Zachariah.  This outfit is in stark contrast to the dresses Miss Doyle wore. Take at look at 19th century women’s dress and fashion to get a better idea of what Miss Doyle was wearing when Zachariah offered her the clothes he made.

Once again, Zachariah mentioned a sailors dish; this one is called Sailors Duff. Below is a recipe you can use to make and try some Sailors Duff for yourself.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 c. brown sugar
1 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. boiling hot water
2 tbsp. melted butter
1 egg

Directions:

Mix all dry ingredients, add the 1 cup of boiling water, 1 egg (beaten), 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Mix well. Pour into greased glass loaf pan, cover and cook 1 1/2 hours at 375 degrees
