Camus – Absurdity and Suicide

Primary Source:

  • Camus, “Philosophical Suicide”, in MS, pp. 28-53

Background:

In “Philosophical Suicide”, Camus discusses the philosophies of Jaspers, Chestov, Kierkegaard, and Husserl and how they react to the absurd. Their responses, which all ultimately fail, are forms of what Camus calls philosophical suicide. Skim the criticisms of Jaspers, Chestov, and Husserl, but focus on the critique of Kierkegaard.

Questions:

  • What is philosophical suicide?
  • Why does Kierkegaard commit philosophical suicide?
