The Composite Materials Research Laboratory conducts active research
on metal-matrix, polymer-matrix, cement-matrix, carbon-matrix and
ceramic-matrix composite materials for aerospace, automotive, marine,
construction, electronic, and other industrial applications.
Composite materials are designed, fabricated and characterized in terms of
their structure and properties. Particular strength of the Laboratory is in
(i) Smart materials and structures
(ii) electronic packaging materials
The Laboratory facility holds a range of equipment including materials
processing and materials testing equipment. Materials processing equipment
includes high temperature furnaces, hot presses, vacuum furnaces, an arc
melting furnace, an electroplating facility, an extruder and mixers. Materials
testing equipment includes mechanical testing systems, a thermal analysis
system (DSC, TGA, TMA, DMA), a thermal diffusivity tester, a surface area/pore
size analyzer, a contact angle analyzer, electronic equipment, an electromagnetic
interference shielding
effectiveness testing system and a corrosion/electrochemical
testing system.
