This project is focused on the optimization of a power coupling for Dresser-Rand. The purpose of a power coupling is to transmit rotational torque and motion between two shafts. For this project, the group has researched current devices available in the market and related patents. Our group has held multiple meetings with an engineer from Dresser-Rand and the customer analysis was done through an interview with him. Ergonomic issues are also considered alongside the functionality of the product. These shafts are bonded together with an interference fit produced by squeezing one of the shafts into the other using high hydraulic pressure. In the Dresser-Rand power coupling, hydraulic fluid is used to expand the larger hub and pressure from the fluid is then used to push the smaller shaft in. To achieve tighter fits the pressure used to generate the interference fit must be increased. At higher pressures the coupling begins to deflect due to the pressure causing the edges to dig into the shaft creating localized contact stress that make the future removal of the shaft difficult. Finally a quality function deployment analysis was performed to help direct the efforts for the customer needs.
