About

The longer one dwells on the idea of their own life, it becomes more and more obvious just how small it is compared to everything else in existence. For the average person, to be able to live to one hundred years old would not only be considered a long life but also an great accomplishment to themselves. Yet, when this hundred years is put in comparison to the rest of history, it is nothing more than a dot on picture miles long.

Humans like to pride themselves in their apparent conquest and control over nature, when in reality a simple look back in time would show we are far that is from the truth. America, as its own independent state, has existed for less than two hundred and fifty years. Look back even more and one will find that our mother country, England, has existed as a state for just about one thousand years. At the most generous estimate, that is still almost 10 times longer than any person on this planet will live. Lets continue with this game. The Roman Empire was around over two thousand years ago, twenty times longer than anyone will ever live, and Mesopotamia, one of the worlds first civilizations, existed over five thousand and five hundred years ago, 50 times longer than any life than any life that has ever been lived by a human.

Yet, this scale has only compared a life to that of other lives, which still is not the most accurate way to compare time. Things have existed since before humans came to be. There are trees alive today that are nearly 5000 years old. Life has existed on earth for about 3 billion years, and if you want the age of the planet add an extra billion onto that. The lens can continue to zoom out. How long has the solar system existed? The galaxy? To go back to the very beginning, the universe itself is 14 billion years old. Thats 14,000,000,000 years. Divide that by 100 to get 140,000,000, and thats the real measuring stick to compare the length of a life to.

Hence the reason for this website, as a reminder to the rest of the world just how tiny they are when compared to the big picture. Humans seem in control now, but that has only been the case for a fraction of the time we have had absolutely no control. Look through this website and explore its photos and their sounds as a way to be reminded that our world may not be “ours” forever, as nature has its way of taking its world back under control.
