The power of information and the magic of literature have been evident, and an omnipresent force, in my life since I can remember. Perhaps inherently curious by nature, or inspired by lifelong learners for parents, I have always followed a thread of information to learn more about a given subject or devoured the complete works of one author after another – the quintessential autodidact. I vividly remember the classmate from elementary school who introduced me to reading great literature for fun and opened my world in a way I could never have imagined. She was, of course, the smartest girl in the school and the connection to reading was evident even then to me. Because I know a child’s success is strongly connected to reading, the gift she gave me is a gift I would like to spend the rest of my days giving to other children.
I followed a creative path, (a B.F.A. in film studies), for my undergraduate degree which led me to a twenty plus year career in the film production industry where I used my strong leadership skills and creativity to succeed as a producer, eventually culminating as an Executive Producer where I created and managed a satellite company in New York City.
Shortly after having my son (and while still working part time in the commercial production industry), I rediscovered through volunteering the importance of libraries, literacy, and reading with children, and so I became extremely active in many volunteer opportunities to support the library and children’s reading programs in the schools and the community. As my values were shifting from the profit making private sector of the advertising business to public service, I began to research social work, public administration, and early childhood education. Working in a library hadn’t occurred to me as it was something I gave my time to freely, and with great pleasure.
My passion and commitment to the field of library and information science is evident now that I am employed in a public library children’s department and a middle school library. I look forward to going to work where I can provide excellent customer service and support to our patrons. I run book clubs for elementary students while continuing to suggest new and innovative programs to support their learning and involvement in the library. I have become a valuable reader’s advisory resource and enthusiastically encourage the children to read. I am an active member of national and local library associations to keep current with my continuing education and the profession.
My life experience, work ethic, commitment to excellence in my academic goals, and my commitment to libraries, children and reading has already made me an asset to the libraries I work currently. I aspire to deepen my knowledge and pursue a career where I support, inspire and encourage children every day to nurture their reading habits and embrace all that it can offer them.
