Checkerboard Mesa, Mt. Camel Hwy on our way to Buckskin Gulch. The name stems from the cliffs distinctive checker-board pattern. The horizontal lines are caused by cross-bedding, a remnant of ancient sand dunes. The vertical lines formed because of the contraction and expansion of the sandstone.
