Studying in Buffalo is great for natives and foreigners
The University at Buffalo, also called The State University of New York or simply the UB belongs to the State University New York system (SUNY) which is the biggest compound of universities in the in the US. The four most important universities in this compound are Binghamton University, State University of New York at Stony Brook, University at Albany and of course the University at Buffalo.
Numbers of students
Approximately 30.000 students visit the UB. This size is averagely for the importance of the UB if you compare the number of students with other big universities. The biggest university in Germany, in Cologne, counts 43.000 students and the Paris 1 counts 38.000 students. Between 30.000 and 40.000 students is an averagely number for a big university, but it is comparatively nothing to the biggest universities in the US or in Austria which count 51.800 students or even 76.000 in Vienna. If you look at these numbers you have to keep in mind that the different campuses are not counted together, they represent only the number of students in one single university. If you count the campuses together, the university system of Ohio (not a single university but a system of all universities in the state Ohio) would have 478.000 students.
A little history
1846 the UB was founded as a private medical university although university is the wrong word because first it was only opened to teach the doctors from the surrounded villages. Students first entered the UB in 1847, which was furthermore only designed as medical school. Millard Fillmore was the first president of the university and later also the president of the US. Up to the year 1946, the UB acquired property from different counties and institutions and developed little by little all important Colleges and departments for example Arts and Sciences, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Engineering and Applied Sciences. Since 2004 the UB started a big plan including new departments, new students and new staff members. This strategy plan has the goal to increase the size of the university by about 40 per cent and will be managed at 2020.
UB the exchange university
The UB is known as a university which keeps good contact with other educational institutions and research centres, above all of course with other universities all over the world. Especially for exchanges of students or semesters abroad in the US the UB is very popular because they are experienced and prepared for this situation. Students from abroad can participate in lots of different projects and attend all the great lectures. Spending a semester abroad is not only a benefit for your English, but you will get to know lots of people, the every day life at a very different university and of course all things, not concerning university but living in a foreign country, in fact their culture, the food, the habits and just their way of living.
