What Is Sports Betting?
Introduction
What exactly is sports betting and what should you about it? In the strictest sense, if you bet on sport you are in fact placing a wager. Now you may well think - hang on I asked what is a sporting bet, but unfortunately you need to be clear as to what is meant by a bet, wager and indeed gamble, before we can really move on. But don’t worry, we will explain everything you need to know.
Wagers - Bets – Gambles
If you place a bet you are risking your money against someone else’s money on the result of an event in which neither of you can be certain of the exact result. Suppose, I bet you ten dollars on the flip of a coin, neither of us can know if it will come head or tails, so we’re both taking a risk on the outcome - we’re both betting. So, what’s the difference if I gamble with you? If we were to play a game of chance for money, we would be gambling. Now then, there’s a great discussion as to what constitutes a game of luck and a game of skill - you’d probably say that Chess is a skill game, but what about Poker? Anyway, the upshot is that if we aren’t playing against each other we’re not gambling but betting. Which brings us back to the significance of wagers in sports betting? A wager is a bet placed on the outcome of a game, race or match between at least two teams or players.
Sports you can bet on
The kind of sport you are able to place bets on is often determined by the country you live in. Taking the line that any competition between opposing players or teams that gives rise to amusement or diversion to the spectator is a sport - you can place a bet on just about anything. The obvious ones that come to everyone’s mind are horse racing, football (both American football and soccer), basketball, baseball, hockey, tennis and boxing. A problem for American citizens, unless they live in Nevada, it’s hard to bet on sports because of the American laws.
USA sports bets and Sportsboards
In many countries around the world you are able to place any kind of bet you want on any sporting event you like. May be it the Super Bowl down to a local league match or the Hockey preseason down to a local car race - in the USA the powers that be believe we will all become totally corrupted by the possibility to bet on sporting events as we see fit. Subsequently Americans are only able to bet on what are known as ‘Sportsbooks’. A Sportsbook is a board inside a sports betting facility that shows the sporting events that you can bet on. These are known as the board games and are restricted to the major sporting events such as the Super Bowl, major league baseball or NFL match-ups or the Golf Masters, along with the more important college games. Outside of Nevada the only way to do this was by having an offshore account with an international sportsbook. As a matter effect the internet ,and its possibilities for online sports betting, became very popular.
Betting on sports online
Many countries, especially European countries, have a more relaxed policy when it comes to sport betting. Subsequently, by using one of the many online betting sites with focus on, say Football sports betting - you can live in the United States and place any type of sports bet you like. Please be aware that technically, even internet sports betting is illegal in most states - however, the authorities so far aren’t interested in prosecuting punters, but have been known to suit the sports betting websites instead. Of course the majority of online betting is that you can place your bets 24/7 and not only on the result of a sporting fixture. If you fancy placing a proposition bet on who’ll get a hole in one or score the first field goal- you are able to. Another form of betting, which is getting more and more popular, is to bet on sport against other people.
