Proposition (Prop) Betting

From Super Bowl to reality TV to everything in between

Introduction

If you’d be on your way to an appointment in say one of the biggest cities of the United States – let us take for example the fashion metropolis New York City – and you’d walk by ten random people stopping to ask them if the considered themselves to be betting people, chances are nine, if not all ten, would tell you ‘no’. If you would instead ask those same ten people if they’ve ever made a bet, the majority would say ‘yes’ and, if you dig a little deeper then to ask what they bet on at some points of time, the answer would invariably turn out to be the same – the Super Bowl. For the Super Bowl is the single biggest sports betting event of the year, drawing attention to more bettors than any other single event could ever do, people are very likely to make a simple bet with a friend or place a bet on the moneyline, spread or total with an online sports book. But, other, more seasoned online sports bettors will recommend you that the actual worthy bets connected to Super Bowl are proposition bets.

The Super Bowl and Proposition Betting

In the online sports betting world, prop betting is a common, everyday occurrence, but throw an event as huge in magnitude as the Super Bowl into the mix and the online gambling sites go prop crazy. It’s even gotten to the point where Super Bowl propositions have become so popular with sports bettors that the online sports books have been forced into thinking and developing into a different direction. Outside the usual team and player props, sports books have taken to offering odds on things such as the results of the game opening coin flip, the color of Gatorade dumped on the winning coach’s head, the length of the national anthem performance, and even the antics of half-time performers on-stage and celebrities in the crowd.

One very important key thing to keep in one’s mind when betting on the next Super Bowl proposition bets is to do it online because as a source of mass media online sports books will always have a larger, more varied range of proposition bets to choose from. Land-based Casinos are mostly enormously restricted in exactly what they can and can’t offer props on, whereas online sports books have their self-set freedom to offer odds on nearly anything they want, including reality TV shows, elections, sales of the next hot tech gadget, celebrities - the possibilities are endless.

Entertainment Propositions

In the last past years of Super Bowl proposition bets developed a more focused view on the entertainment factor than the stats for it increasingly became more mainstream and popular. The increased appetite among sports bettors for proposition bets with more of a focus on entertainment and celebrity factors then sports inevitably resulted in the creation of a new category offered at proposition bet stations – entertainment proposition bets. While some sports books do not yet offer entertainment props, others have gone as far as to create new positions dedicated to the creation of the props and odds. Very popular topics for such entertainment props run the gamut from everything from reality TV like the Kardashian show and award shows like the annual Academy Awards, to celebrity break-ups (who ever thought Aniston and Pitt would really break it?) and pregnancies (isn’t Britney Spears’ sister Jamie Lynn a bit too young to have a child?!), to the next President of the United States of America (some people would have lost a lot of money betting on Hilary being the first choice, wouldn’t they?). If you can name it, chances are you can bet on it.
