Just to be sure – I am talking about Buffalo, the second largest city in the federal state New York. Mostly if anyone talks about Buffalo, he or she means the New York Buffalo but there are overall 23 cities in the United States called Buffalo. “Our” Buffalo, the biggest one, has 280.000 citizens and now it is evident which Buffalo I am telling the most important facts. But it is also nice to know that there exists other Buffalos too.

In the year 1759 the city was first seen on a map but the origin of the word “Buffalo” is unfortunately not known. In 1759 Buffalo was called “Buffalo Creek” and this was also the name for it on the map.
We all know – The United States have some really great and above all high buildings and one of the highest you can find in Buffalo, in fact the City Hall which is additionally listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Beside the City Hall 70 other buildings have their place in this list.

The Niagara Falls

Buffalo is a seaport and the Niagara Falls or not far from there, it is situated at the beginning of the Niagara River and opposite to the city Fort Erie. The Niagara Falls is of course in the centre of interest and is a big tourist attraction. Above all newly-weds chose this place for honeymoon because it is said that the Falls spray a special power. Using the enormously water power of the Falls made the city Buffalo a very modern and industrially successful city. They built power stations to utilize the water power, but deflecting all the water to the power stations would mean that the Niagara Falls would not exist anymore for the tourists; there would be nothing spectacular to watch. Therefore the United States signed a contract which says that during the tourist season only 50 per cent of the water can be deflected to the power stations to keep alive this wonder of nature for the tourists. Off-season 75 per cent of the water is deflected to the power station.

Extraordinary weather conditions

Spending the summer in Buffalo is especially great because the summer is very dry and warm. It is raining rarely but the plants are still fresh and green. During the day in 65% of all possibilities the sun shines actually and that is a very high value. The location of the city near the river causes a cold gentle breeze which makes the hot days convenient in the summer. In the winter you should reckon on large amounts of snow which is also conditional on the location of the city.

Facts that made Buffalo popular

On the 6th of September in 1901 the 25th president of the United States, William McKinley, was wounded by the anarchist Leon Czolgosz. McKinley died eight days after the assassination of his injuries. At the same day, Theodore Roosevelt was appointed to the president.

The American Football Team “Buffalo Bills” helped the city enormously to get popular and to memorize the name Buffalo.
