ADOPTED!

Update: Juliette lived a long and wonderful life with her beloved Laura, later enjoying the love of Laura's husband, Anand, and another rescue, Sable, before she passed away in November 2003. We believe she was about 10 years old when she finally rested.. Juliette inspired both her foster and forever families to go on and rescue many other animals. In honor of her gentle passing, we have named one of our cats for her: Julius, a big smooch of an orange tabby, whom I affectionately call "Jules", the nickname I used for Juliette as well.

We'll never forget Juliette. Her story, written in 1997, follows.
Picture of Juliette
She was adopted on May 3, 1997, and now happily resides with Laura and two cats in Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. We believe Juliette is a Sar Planina based on her history (see below). She is almost 4 years old, weighs about 80 pounds, and stands 25-26 inches tall. Her coat is a Grey Brindle color, much like Nushi. Her demeanor is extremely sweet, and in typical LGD fashion, she adopts territory whenever permitted. She has been emotionally deprived, and desperately seeks attention from humans. We also believe she has been physically abused sometime in her past, because when we first brought her home she would cringe at a raised arm or object. She is somewhat dog aggressive, although she and Nushi did play and really seemed to enjoy each other's company. They fought several times as they divided up territory and establish their pack order. Sadly, Juliette showed no interest in toys of any kind, and seldom ate biscuits or treats except for rawhide chews until the day she was adopted. Juliette was imported into Canada sometime in late 1993 or early 1994 from Macedonia (probably the Illyrian Mountains in the Yugoslavian portion of Macedonia) along with her brother, Romeo. She has been to obedience school in Vancouver. Her original owner placed both dogs at his factory in St. Catharine's where they were pretty much covered with soot all the time. A dog lover convinced the original owner to give Juliette to him, but with two other large dogs of his own, he was unable to keep her. Juliette then lived with a family near Lewiston, NY, who kept her outside in a 6x10 pen with just a cab from an old truck for shelter, no hay or bedding, seldom walked or interacted with other than for her maintenance. She was fed a large bowl of dry food every few days, and had taken to burying her food, possibly because she didn't really know when she would be fed again. This family's circumstances finally forced them to give her up to rescue, and we picked her up on Easter Sunday. Juliette is just one success story in a sea of discarded, neglected, and forgotten animals.
