THE THEORY OF WILLIAM DÖRPFELD 1925

From William Dörpfeld (who continued Heinrich Schliemann's excavations at Troy) and Heinrich Rüter, Die Heimkehr des Odysseus (München 1925). This map represents the world as these scholars imagine Homer knew it, encircled by the river Ocean. The green line indicates a route traversed four  times: to Circe’s Aeaea (Aiaia), back to realm of the dead somewhere on river Ocean, back again to Circe, and finally back to the Mediterranean. Note location of Calypso's "island" on the heel of the Italian boot.
