MARRIAGE OF PELEUS & THETIS. E. Burne-Jones (c.1878; Birmingham, City Museum and Art Gallery)
At the wedding of Peleus and Thetis all the gods are in attendance. But Eris, the goddess of strife (bat-winged at the extreme right in this depiction*), introduces an apple "for the most beautiful," while the three Fates (seated on the ground in front of the table) spin, measure, and cut the thread of inevitable destiny. The apple for beauty is claimed by Aphrodite, Athena, and Hera (top row, left to right, with extended hands, at the table). How to resolve the conflict?
