Library Budget Cuts

Dear Letters to the Editor,

Sometimes with budget cuts, it makes sense to question the motivation behind the places where the cuts occur and how they are performed. Thomas Jefferson observed, “A democratic society depends on an informed and educated citizenry.” A statement that leads to a certain amount of questioning about the motives of our elected representatives in this current round of budget cuts to non-mandated services. Libraries provide access news sources and more importantly voter registration. In many neighborhoods, they are the only place to register that can be reached by people that work first or second shift jobs.

Perhaps the officials should decide if implying a willingness to remove information and the ability to become voters from the public is really something that they wish to do.

Sincerely,
Jason Parker
