Course objectives


1. To provide students with an overview of the development of Spanish-American literature from its beginnings to the present and to situate said literature in its historical context.

2. To provide reading skills and literary approaches that will enable students to confront a text critically.

3. To give students the opportunity to put to practice their Spanish oral and writing skills.

 
Class requirements


1. Attendance: 2 free absences (oral grade lowered after 3rd).

2. Oral participation: students must be prepared for each class and must participate actively to receive good oral grade.

3. Three exams: I, Sept. 23; II, Oct. 28; III, Dec. 9.
a. Each exam will cover material read up to date of examination; ie. exams are not cumulative.

4. Students will occasionally be asked to lead class discussion.

5. Papers: two 4-6 double-spaced, typed pages (about 1000 words).
a. 1-inch margins all around, 12 point type
b. pages should be numbered
c. give your papers a title
d. due dates: Paper I, October 12 and Paper II, on or before December 17.
e. Take these questions into account.

The papers will consist of literary analyses of texts discussed in class or of the works of an author belonging to the periods discussed. Papers submitted to other instructors are unacceptable.

 
Grade distribution

Exams: I-15%; II-20%; III-20%

Papers: I-15%; II-15%

Oral participation: 15%

+'s and -'s will be assigned

*NOTE*: There is no extra credit available in this course.
Rationale: If student cannot successfully complete the requirements, it is logically impossible to do extra work.
