Selective Bibliography

Books

Suggestions are welcome.

Bacher, Lutz. Max Ophuls in the Hollywood Studios. New Brunswick, N.J.: Rutgers University Press, 1996.
An excellent book, in particular, it details the production of "The Reckless Moment." Well worth the read.

Bennett, Joan. How to Be Attractive. New York: A.A. Knopf, 1943.
This is more of a curiosity than anything else. For those interested in WWII era beauty advice, it may be worth hunting down. I have been unable to determine if this was ghost-written or not.

Bennett, Joan, and Lois Kibbee. The Bennett Playbill. 1st ed. New York: Holt Rinehart and Winston, 1970.
Bennett's autobiography. Unfortunately sparse on details of her career, the book is nonetheless worth obtaining.

Bernstein, Matthew. Walter Wanger, Hollywood Independent. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1994.
An extremely well-researched and thorough look at Walter Wanger's life and career, this book contains some excellent information on Bennett and several of her films.

Brooks, Louise. Lulu in Hollywood. 1st ed. New York: Knopf, 1982.
Aside from being an engrossing autobiography and a fascinating look at the late silent era of film making, it also includes a glimpse of the Bennett family. Brooks was good friends with Joan Bennett's sister Barbara.

Harvey, James. Movie Love in the Fifties. 1st ed. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2001.
Film criticism about several movies, including an excellent chapter on "The Reckless Moment."

Kellow, Brian. The Bennetts: An Acting Family. Lexington: University Press of Kentucky, 2004.
Well-researched and objective account of the Bennett family (Richard, Joan, Constance, and Barbara). The author also looks at their theatrical and cinematic contributions.

Parish, James Robert and Don E. Stanke. The Glamour Girls. New Rochelle, New York: Arlington House Publishers, 1975.
Bennett rates a lengthy essay in this book. Despite several errors and slightly fan-magazine like coverage, there is a superb collection of photographs that make this one worth hunting down.
