Parent Helpers Always Welcome!

If you are one of the parents that drop your child off on Monday nights and have to “kill time” till 9:30, please consider stopping in! I’ll put you to work. My goal is to organize all the music GBYO has collected over the years and I could use your help sorting and filing music, etc. Just meet me by the auditorium and we’ll get started! Thanks.

President’s Message....
from the Youth Orchestra Board President

As the new president of the Youth Orchestra I would like to take the time to welcome the musicians, staff, and parents to the 42nd season of the GBYO and the 18th season of the GBYSO. This wonderful organization has, for all these years, strived to provide a place where some of the finest musicians of Western New York can hone their skills and grow as both musicians and individuals.
Our season will kick off with a weekend of music camp in Dunkirk, the weekend following Labor Day. This is always a great time for our young musicians to renew friendships from previous seasons and develop new friendships which,. hopefully, will last for years. Also, I am looking forward to meeting you at our Annual Meeting which is held the last day of Camp. This year we will once again play side by side with the Buffalo Philharmonic during November concerts conducted jointly by Ms. JoAnn Faletta and Dr. Gerard Floriano.
In February our tour schedule will resume with a trip to New York City to play with the Hudson Valley Youth Symphony over the Patriot's Day weekend. We will also attend a performance of the New York Philharmonic. We will again be selling Entertainment Books in October as a fundraiser for the NYC tour.
A President's Message would not be complete without a plea for help from our parents. We need help with ticket sales, baking goodies for the post concert receptions, and selling T-shirts and CD's at the concerts. I know I can count on your support again this year. If you can help us in any way please contact one of the Board members to let us know.
If you have any questions and concerns about the upcoming season don't hesitate to call me.

Norma Fletcher
GBYO Board President 2000-2001

Parents:
Please ask your musician if there were any handouts at the rehearsal that you need to see.

Quite often important messages are given to your child at rehearsal, so get in the habit of checking with them or checking their music folder.

GBYSO News

The Greater Buffalo Youth String Orchestra will begin its 17th season this fall with rehearsals starting on Monday, September 11th. Rehearsals will be held at the Mill Middle School on Mill Street in Williamsville from 7 to 9 PM. This year's String Orchestra is made up of 38 string players in grades 4 through 11 from 16 different public, private and parochial schools in Erie County.
The GBYSO, under the direction of its conductor Dennis Lell, will be preparing an interesting variety of music for its first concert in November at Mill Middle School. In observance of the 250th anniversary of the death of Johann Sebastian Bach, the ensemble will perform the German master's Brandenburg Concerto #3 in G. Next will be Mozart's Divertimento #3 for strings written by the Austrian composer when he was only a teenager. A suite of three compositions by the gifted Irish cellist and composer Victor Herbert including pieces entitled "Air De Ballet," "Forget-Me-Not," and "Sunset" will be performed. Lastly, the much loved Capriol Suite by the 20th Century English composer Peter Warlock will complete the program.
Please come out to support our young string players and attend our free concerts this season. Our concerts are usually about an hour in length and feature interesting spoken commentary by our conductor and, of course, great music from the string orchestra repertoire.

GBYO To Tour NYC in February
The New York City Tour plans are progressing nicely. We will depart early Friday, Feb. 16th, for a rehearsal and concert with the Hudson Valley Youth Orchestra. We will be staying in Tarrytown, NY both nights. Saturday, we will go into the city for a walking tour around lunch, then travel to Lincoln Center for a back-stage tour, private concert talk with one of the musicians of the N.Y. Philharmonic, and dinner at the Juilliard cafeteria, followed by the New York Philharmonic Concert. Dr. Floriano is arranging a concert in Utica on the way home Sunday, Feb. 18th. More detailed information will be forthcoming. Fund-raising is available to the students through the sale of Entertainment Books.
