Using Monitor on post-XP era computers

The following outlines how to emulate DOS prompt, a feature removed on all post windows XP operating systems (ie windows vista, windows 7, windows 8) which is required to run Monitor.  Using this emulator, it is possible to run Monitor on newer PCs through the program DOSbox.

1)      Download DOSbox from the DOSbox website (Freeware) or follow this direct download link:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/dosbox/files/dosbox/0.74/DOSBox0.74-win32-installer.exe/download

2)      Run the installer.  Leave all installer settings as they are.

3)      If it is your first time using Monitor, then downloaded monitor by extracting monitor2.zip (http://www.buffalo.edu/~kristal/download/)  to C:\Monitor,

OR

If you are already have a Monitor folder you will need to move your existing folder containing monitor into the directory C:\Monitor

Make sure monitor isn’t stored in a subfolder (ie C:\monitor\monitor).  All of the program contents should be contained directly in c:\Monitor

The folder would look something like this, although there may be more files depending on whether you downloaded or copied your own version of Monitor.

4)      In the start menu, open All Programs -> DOSbox-0.74 -> Options -> DOSbox-0.74 Options

5)      A document will open in notepad called “dosbox-0.74.conf” Scroll to the bottom of the document and you will see this:

[autoexec]

# Lines in this section will be run at startup.

# You can put your MOUNT lines here.

You will need to insert the following lines so that the result reads this:

[autoexec]

# Lines in this section will be run at startup.

mount c c:\monitor

c:

# You can put your MOUNT lines here.

Screenshot to illustrate:

6)      Go to file->save and save your changes to this document.  If you fail to save, this step will not be completed.

7)      You can now load DOSbox.  Go to All Programs -> DOSbox-0.74 -> DOSbox-0.74

8)      A window will appear and should read C:\>_ on the last line.  You can now do the following:

Typing “Monitor2.exe” will load the Monitor program (no quotes)

Typing “Msupport.exe” will load the support program (again no quotes)

9)      You can use these programs as you normally would.  All program data will be stored and saved to c:\monitor

10)   If you copied data and settings files into C:\Monitor with you, they should be preserved

11)   Note that you must keep the program present in this directory in order for this method to work.
