Dr. T. Kesavadas (kesh)

Biography 

Dr. Kesavadas is a faculty in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and adjunct faculty in Computer Science and Engineering Department. He also holds an adjunct faculty position at the Rosewell Park Cancer Institute. Kesh is the Founder-Director of the UB-Virtual Reality Laboratory. His research areas include virtual reality, haptics and bioengineering. He completed his doctoral studies in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University in 1995. Prior to joining UB, kesh worked as a scientist at the Iowa Center for Emerging Manufacturing Technology at Iowa State University between 1995 and 1996.

Dr. Kesavadas has also co-founded two start-up companies: Simulated Surgical Systems LLC and Tactus Technologies Inc..

Professional Activities

Kesh is actively involved in the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME). He was selected as a Leadership Development Intern (LDI) in1997 and was appointed by the ASME President to the prestigious Futures Team in 2000 to chart the future of the society. He is the current chair (2011-2012) of the Material Handling Division of ASME having served as the chair once before in 2004. Dr. Kesavadas is also active in  IEEE. Kesh chaired the Web Committee for the ICRA 2000 held in San Francisco and the Video Proceedings committee for ICRA 2002. He also co-chaired ASME Symposium on Virtual Environment for Manufacturing and the NIST-ASME Industrial VR Conference held in Chicago in Nov. 1999 and was the Co-chair of the Virtual Reality in Industry Seminar held in conjunction with ASME Winter Annual Meeting in Washington DC, 2003. 

Research and Teaching

Honors

Dr.Kesh Kesavadas (along with Dr.Khurshid Guru, Roswell Park Cancer Institute) was honored by the University at Buffalo as the 2011 "Entrepreneur of the Year" for co-founding Simulated Surgical Systems LLC - developer of RoSS Robotic Surgical Simulator. Dr. Kesavadas, along with co-inventors Drs. James Mayrose and Kevin Chugh was honored as the “Inventor of the Year” for 2004 by Western New York & Buffalo Niagara Technical Societies and Intellectual Property Association for the patent “A System and Method for Analyzing a Region Below One or More Layers of Tissue” (United States Patent No. 6,752,770.).

In 2002 Dr. Kesavadas was profiled by the Business Week in an article titled 'Five Gurus of Medical Technology' for his work on medical VR.  Kesh was also profiled in India Abroad, Rediff.com, the Week, the Times of India editorial, Design Magazine and Christian Science Monitor. His work in Virtual Reality have been featured in international media such as the Discovery Channel, Wired Magazine, Popular Science, Business Week, BBC, CNN Headline News etc.  

Personal


Kesh hails from Palakkad, a small town situated in the strategic gap in the Western Mountain ranges of India. Palakkad is the door way to the beautiful state of Kerala which we call "God's Own Country".  He enjoys music, travel and tennis.
