Assignment 2

TASK 1

No ownership information was available at the webpage URL provided, http://www.flyonthewall.tv/news.php. However, by trimming the URL, the following contact information can be found on the site’s homepage, under the “We’d love to hear from you” section. 90 Long Acre Covent Garden London WC2E 9RZ UK Phone: +44 20 7381 5500 Twitter: @flyonthewall_eu Facebook: @FlyOnTheWallBroadcastProduction LinkedIn: (company profile) @flyonthewall They also have an option for users to subscribe to an e-mail newsletter. We also found, on the About Us page, that Flyonthewall.tv is an event broadcasting company that streams live events, such as the Royal Wedding and the UK Papal visit in 2010. We noticed there is a company seal at the bottom of their webpage [© FLYONTHEWALL2015], telling us that they are a private company.

TASK 2

According to the whois lookup, the website, flyonthewall.tv, is administered (probably owned) by: Jason Gleave, of FlyOnTheWall Ltd., located at: Studio 5, The Quadrangle, 49 Atalanta Street, London, SW6 6TU, UK. Phone: +44 20 7381 5500 (same phone as listed above for FlyOnTheWall contact info). However, the registered tech is Mareen Eisenmann, of Xodox GmbH, located at: Konrad-Ott-Strasse 2, Forchheim, Germany, 91301. Phone: +49 91 9173 3870. The registrar company is eNom, Inc. We discovered via the site’s social media links that it also goes by the address flyonthewall.com, which is hosted by Patrick Asche (still owned by Jason Gleave). The IP location is listed in Frankfurt, Germany. We learned that the site is hosted by ENOM, INC with an IP address of 95.143.172.150. We also found the website's creation (6/19/2000), expiration (6/19/2017), and last registration update (5/9/2016). We also found: Registry Domain ID: 87168462_Domain_TV-VRSN Domain Status: clientTransferProhibited https://www/icann.org/epp#clientTransferProhibited

TASK 3

Per iana.org, the .tv top-level domain is a country code that belongs to the Tuvalu Ministry of Finance and Tourism (located in Vaiaku Funafuti, Tuvalu), but is managed by Verisign Global Registry Services. The sponsoring organization and the administrative contact are in the country of Tuvalu and the technical contact is in Virginia, US. The URL for .tv registration services is http://www.tv, which redirects to a page on verisign.com, where it appear.s anyone can buy a .tv domain through another redirect to a varie, pty of partners (e.g. register.com, godaddy.com, etc.)

TASK 4 Entering the url, flyonthewall.tv, in http://www.find-ip.net/ip-locator revealed that this IP, 95.143.172.150, is located in Germany. Tracing the path of the packets resulted in 12 hops – 9 within the US and 2 in Germany, at a total distance of 6,546 miles. Similar information was found via a host trace at www.yougetsignal.com/tools/visual-tracert. All hops in the packets path for this URL's IP address are listed below: 1. 107.170.234.253 2. 138.197.248.208 3. ntt.net 4. ntt.net 5. ntt.net 6. ntt.net 7. ntt.net 8. ntt.net 9. ntt.net 10. rh-tec.de 11. rh-tec.de 12. flyonthewall.com DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS Who is responsible for the content on flyonthewall.tv? Ultimately, a variety of people are responsible for the content on this website, but if one needed to contact a single individual responsible for the site, we would give them the name, Jason Gleave. Additional details follow. By examining the original link provided, and also by trimming the URL to flyonthewall.tv/, we discerned that FlyOnTheFall appears to be a private company that produces its own web content, with the exception of small bits of borrowed promotional video clips from previous clients, such as LoveGold. We learned from the site that the company is located at 90 Long Acre, Covent Garden, London. Through their social media links, we learned that the company also owns flyonthewall.com, which shares the same IP address. Owning both addresses increases the odds of being discovered online and prevents consumers from mistaking another company for the original FlyOnTheWall. The registration was last updated in May 2016, so it is probably still relatively accurate. We discovered that the site is hosted by eNOM.com, a US-based company, and is owned by Jason Gleave, of London. The IP address, 95.143.172.150, is in Germany, where the registered tech for the site, Mareen Eisenmann, resides, which is almost symbolic of their growing, global presence, with customers all over the world! Also, the top-level domain belongs to Tuvalu, but anyone can purchase a .tv website, so Tuvalu does not exactly figure in to the day-to-day functioning of FlyOnTheWall. We found that tracing the path from NY to the IP location in Germany resulted in 12 hops, travelling ~6,546 miles, through the US and Germany. Any variations in trace time or destination could be due to geographic location and internet connectivity speeds. The final hop for flyonthewall.tv landed at flyonthewall.com, which is owned by the same person, Jason Gleave. Flyonthewall.com does not redirect to flyonthewall.tv, but we think it is possible that both domains point to the same server or content, explaining why the .tv ends up at the .com. Additionally, we saw other geographical inconsistencies. The domain admin is located in London, the tech and the site’s IP are located in Germany, and the top-level domain belongs to Tuvalu, a Polynesian island in the Pacific. The hosting company is based in the US. The variations in geographical locations demonstrate the truly global nature of the world wide web. Finally, this exercise illustrates a true challenge in figuring out who runs a website. As budding LIS professionals, we found the exercise to be doable, if somewhat challenging. It gives us a better sense of how difficult such a task would be for the average patron, who does not have the benefit of inevitably being presented with clear-cut instructions from a professor. The onus, then, is on us, as LIS professionals, to assist patrons in finding out answers to questions similar to those presented in this assignment, and eventually assisting those patrons in learning how to carry out similar tasks on their own.
