Welcome to CDS289's Spectrogram Page
Spring 2000 Edition

Spectogram #1

" is us"
This shows the influence of lip rounding on the frequency concentration of s. The low frequency u
makes s noise lower in frequency.

Spectrogram #2

A narrowband view of a female saying "that's just insight"
Notice the rising harmonics due to the stress on "insight". Also
realize how the frication noise is different than the harmonic bands.

Spectrogram #3

Female saying "Spook"
Notice how the labial consonant p lowers the s frication noise.

Spectogram #4

"that's just insight"
Notice the higher amplitude of "insight" due to the stress. The aI becomes shorter and voiceless
because the I in "insight" is stressed.

Spectogram #5

"that's just in sight"
Notice the clear formant structure with aI.

Spectogram #6

"the boy is greedy"
Notice the influence the voiced stop d has on the vowel i.
Also note that the VOT is short.

Spectogram #7

"the boy is greek"
Notice the influence K has on the vowel i. Compared to "greedy" the i
duration is short. Also notice the formant structure of F2 going from the
back "oy" to the front i.

Spectogram #8

"the grass is green"
The duration of i in "green" is long due to the final nasal.

Spectogram #9

" reject vs. reject"
In the first "reject", the stress is on the first syllable. The i vowel is long
in duration and strong. Also notice how the F3 in r is rising because
it is moving to i. The second "reject" has stress on the second syllable.
There is an increase in the oral closure gap which devoices the vowel I
and shortens its duration. Also notice how the t has a bigger burst
due to the stress of the second syllable.

Spectogram #10

"spoon"

Spectogram #11

"spoon"

Spectogram #12

"meat vs. eat"
Notice how the m makes i have weak F2 and F3 due to the zeros. With the word "eat",
there is no m so the i F2 and F3 frequencies are strong.

Spectogram #13

"pod vs. pot"
