The Deterrence Project

University at Buffalo, SUNY

Four faculty members were "present at the creation" of the of the Center for International Conflict at the University at Buffalo. In addition to Snyder and Diesing, Dean Pruitt of the Psychology Department and Paul Guinn of the History Department also participated in the Center's initial activities. Guinn wrote the case study of the Ruhr Crisis of 1928. Pruitt is a well known early contributor to the field of conflict resolution. His work on Richardson type action-reaction models is considered seminal.

Raoul Naroll's co-authored book with Vern L. Bullouch and Frada Naroll, Military Deterrence in History: A Pilot Cross-Historical Survey, is another important work on conflict that was produced at the University at Buffalo. Paul D. Senese's co-authored book with John A. Vasquez, The Steps to War: An Empirical Study, published by Princeton University Press in 2008, is also noteworthy.

Currently, the research of a number of faculty in the Department of Political Science focuses on interstate conflict and cooperation in general, and deterrence and war (both interstate and civil) in particular. Below are links to their faculty web pages:
