A little Geological Background on this Unique Island

The State of Hawaii is made up of many islands formed by volcanic activity.  Some of which are still very unspoiled and retain thier unique flora, fauna and cultures.  Maui is one of the most popularly visited of the Hawaiian Islands.  The others being Oahu, Hawaii , Kauai, Lanai  and Molokai.

Maui was formed by the action of two volcanoes.   West Maui is dominated by the 5,788 ft Puu Kukui volcano which was the first to form and is now extinct.  It is more rugged and deeply eroded than East Maui.   East Maui is dominated by the younger and larger  10,023 ft Haleakala volcano.   This volcano is now dormant.  While it was still growing, enough lava flowed down its slopes to back up at the base of Puu Kukui (West Maui volcano) to form the central isthmus which connects the two ends of the island.   This isthmus or saddle is now a rich agricultural area.
