Product Description:
Glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH) catalyzes the reversible
conversion of dihydroxyacetone
phosphate (DHAP) to glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P).
In
the glycerol phosphate shuttle, DHAP is reduced by the cytosolic GPDH (GPDH1 or
cGPDH), which is NADH dependent, to G3P. G3P can diffuse from the cytoplasm to
the inner mitochondrial membrane where it is oxidized back to DHAP by the
mitochondrial GPDH (GPDH2 or mGPDH), which is FAD-dependent. The
cytosolic and mitochondrial GPDH enzymes thus constitute an electron shuttle
mechanism that facilitates the transfer of reducing equivalents from the cytosol
to mitochondria. Since G3P also plays a role in lipid biosynthesis, GPDH serves
to coordinate carbohydrate and lipid metabolism.
GPDH activity is also known to increase during adipogenic
differentiation.
