Course Description: Students are introduced to childrens first language acquisition of phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Most of the course will focus on development from infancy to preschool age, but language development across the lifespan will also be discussed. In addition, parallel developments in cognition and biology, and the cultural influences on language acquisition will be discussed. Finally, we will briefly examine some aspects of atypical language development. The course is intended to be of interest to students of speech and hearing, linguistics, psychology, early child development, or education. |
