Course Description: Students are introduced to articulatory and acoustic phonetics. The course will focus mainly on the recognition, description, and transcription of American English speech sounds using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). With the completion of this course, students should have a basic understanding of speech production (and some perception), a knowledge of the use and application of phonetics, and the ability to recognize and transcribe spoken American English using the IPA.

Course Requirements (TOTAL 300 POINTS):

1. 3 Exams — Exam I (50 points)

Exam II (50 points)

Cumulative Exam III (100 points)

 

2. 10 IAP Session Tests (10 pts each for 100 points total).

IAP labs correspond to the Edwards’ IAP Laboratory Workbook and transcription tapes. Transcription tapes available at the Reserve Desk in the Undergraduate Library in Capen Hall. You are responsible for working your way through each session by listening to the practice sessions in the library. You will be tested in class on the 7 manner class sessions and 3 review sessions.

 

Extra Credit (TOTAL 5 POINTS)

Extra credit will be given for in-class assignments -- 1 pt each assignment. Credit will be given only if handed in on day the assignment is done in class.
