Subject:  Defining the Field of Information

Article:  "The Invisible Substrate of Information Science" by Marcia Bates

Abstract:

This article views the field of information science as consisting of two paradigms.  The practical paradigm is well-known as the study of the gathering, organizing, storing, retrieving, and dissemination of information.  This article focuses on the other paradigm, one less well known, and hidden to those who are not in the field of information science, to define the domain and methodology needed to perform the practical processes of information science.  It details how form, organization, and structure have a greater value to an information scientist rather than the content and how subject matter (content) expertise is unnecessary to a skilled information scientist.  The author provides excellent examples throughout the article to illustrate these main points.  Also, a brief history of varying perspectives concerning the field of information science is introduced, followed by discussion regarding of what questions information science should answer.

Presentation:  Information Technology, Informatics, & Information Science, how do they relate to each other?

A brief powerpoint presentation given in class to bring together concepts discussed in the readings and in the article referenced above.
