YMCA Step Test

Instructions for Test Administration

 

 

The YMCA Step Test is a relatively low stress effort and therefore can be used with healthy, low fit individuals.

 

1. Use a 12" bench.                  (A Rubermaid 10' Step Stool may be substituted)

 

2. Set the metronome at 96.  This provides a stepping rate of 24 step-ups per minute. 

 

3. The subject steps for three minutes.

 

4. Upon completion of the test, have the subject sit on the bench.

 

5. Immediately locate the carotid pulse . . . count pulse rate for one minute starting five seconds post exercise.  Record data.

 

6. Refer to the norm tables below for your cardiorespiratory function classification.

            Note the approximate oxygen uptake equivalents of category heart rates.
